Interior Design School

What can an Interior Design School Offer You?

Interior design school can set you on your way to a lucrative career option. Interior design schools train students to attain certificate programs such as BFA, BA, MFA and MA programs in interior design. As a student you can pick a course that best suits your requirement and career aspirations.

What is Interior Design

Interior design is a process that involves converting a selected space into an aesthetic and conducive environment. This conversion is based on the end use of the selected area. For example, the interior design of a kitchen will vary greatly from the design of a bedroom or dining area.

An interior design career will normally include three distinct phases which are planning, design and execution. As an interior designer you will need to work in close collaboration with your client. You will need to incorporate their ideas with your creativity to meet their demanding level of satisfaction.

Creativity, imagination and lateral thinking will go a long way in ensuring that you become a good interior designer. At the same time as a successful interior designer you should be practical and achieve desired results within a specified time and at a reasonable cost.

A Formal Education

In order to set your self up for success, a formal education where you study interior design is highly recommended. In most interior design schools the major emphasis lies on drafting, however the courses will also introduce you to current trends in design, rules and regulations, safety requirements and other standard practices.

For the benefit of students who do not have time to attend a full time program, online interior design schools offer flexible degree programs. These programs are often very similar to on campus programs and students who registers for these online programs can chose their time of study and take their classes from the comfort of their homes.

Degrees Options

Selecting a college for pursuing your interior design degree depends on your goals and present qualifications.

If you are already employed and are looking at becoming a professional interior designer, a certificate interior design program can be an ideal option. This will allow you to continue to study towards a BFA or a BA program at a later date.

If you are aspiring to be an interior designer, BFA and BA programs are offered by many interior design schools. This will provide a good foundation for a successful career.

If you already have an undergraduate degree, the MFA program is worth pursuing if you wish to gain specialized skills and knowledge. A master interior design degree can really separate you from the competition.

Selecting a College

Selecting a suitable college for completing your degree usually depends on the type of degree you’re looking to obtain, where you want to attend school, and the cost of the interior design program. However, your residential location may not be a constraint if you join an online interior design school. An online art school directory is a easy and fast way for you to narrow down your search.

Interior design jobs

Once you obtain an interior design degree, you can join a company as a trainee designer under an experienced designer. At this stage you need to concentrate your efforts in leaning from the experience of others. It will give you a good base to build your skills.

Another alternative is to be self employed and be your own boss. However, this is a choice most suited for those who already have sufficient experience and exposure in this field.

If you decide to be self employed after completing your degree from a top interior design school, you should understand that there may not be regular monthly income. However, you get flexible working hours and have the freedom to do what you want to do without any pressure.

Nature of work

The basic work of a professional who takes up an interior design career involves design of interiors of buildings and rooms. The range of activities performed by any interior designer will include:

1. Meet and negotiate with clients. Exchange of ideas and analysis of requirements and budget
2. Develop basic plans to suit requirements within constraints such as physical dimensions and budgets.
3. Prepare basic design sketches for customer approval
4. Work out color schemes, lighting, fabrics and furnishings and other fittings
5. Prepare preliminary cost estimates
6. Obtain client approvals that may require rework and redesigning
7. Finalize the work contract with the client
8. Prepare detailed drawing of the schemes that have client approval
9. Release of detailed drawings for the execution of the contract
10. Prepare bid documents for job execution
11. Bid evaluation for selecting contractors
12. Monitor and control progress of work if required by client

A self employed professional would need to address all these issues for successful project execution. Top interior design schools will cover most of these areas in their course work and help you prepare for these challenges.

Cabinetry

Cabinets tend to take up most of the wall space in any kitchen. Almost anything is possible, from changing the cabinet doors to painting them. Even sanding prepainted cabinets and then staining them to create a wood finish can create an immediate impact. One of the easiest ways to change the look of cabinets is to replace, or even eliminate, the doors on the upper section only. Going from a closed-door look to a glass pane, stained glass or no-door option can instantly create a more open, airy feel to the cabinets. Also consider the look of the inside of your cabinets. The back wall, and often the shelves, will need to be painted, covered and cleaned. Also, due to the open look, cabinets will need to be kept organized and uncluttered, so get rid of any mismatched dishes, glassware, etc.

Switch cabinet doors from wood to glass on the upper section -

No longer just a place to cook, the kitchen has become the family meeting place and the heart of most homes. Homework is done around the kitchen table while food simmers on the stove. It can also be the most neglected of all rooms, suffering from static cabinetry and furnishings that can't be moved or changed. That doesn't mean it's a space that should be ignored.

Color

Another way to quickly change the look of a kitchen is by painting the open wall areas. Then coordinate accessories to tie in the colors in the room. For example, paint a strong, bright yellow on the open wall space, then coordinate table cloths, dish towels and even window coverings with colors that match the cabinets, flooring, appliances, etc., with a yellow highlight. Add a splash of additional color, such as cobalt blue glass, as an accent.

Online Fashion Schools
With the advent and the growth of the internet and the ready availability of computers in the home, a new option of schooling has opened up for many students. A student seeking a college degree can almost completely study for and receive their degree online in many fields of study. These fields of study available include fashion schools and degrees in fashion.

At the advent of online schools, most people assumed, and with good reason, that an online education was inferior to a four year onsite degree at an accredited college. This idea of inferiority is now slowly changing. One reason for this change in attitude that more and more accredited and proven colleges are offering online classes and online degrees. Another reason for the change is the introduction of guidelines for online school accreditation that have helped to prove the quality of education offered online.

There are many positive aspects to receiving a degree online. One of which is convenience. A stay at home mom for instance can do all of her coursework in the comfort of her home while still being able to care for her children. A student working full time can still work evenings and weekends on their studies in essences going to school full time and working full time. Another positive aspect is being able to receive a degree from a good college in another state without the extra expenditures of housing and the inconvenience of leaving one’s home.

Online fashion schools can be found everywhere. An internet search reveals many schools to choose from in almost every state. A student in the Midwest is now able to get their degree from an accredited university in New York or Online. These two states are the cradle for fashion and fashion design. The Academy of Art University based in San Francisco offers online fashion degrees. In Florida there is the International Academy of Design and Technology. In Colorado, Westwood College Online offers degrees in the fashion industry. The Art Institute of Pittsburgh also offers a fashion degree. There are even online fashion schools based in Europe. For instance the Milan Fashion Campus based in Milano Italy.

Certainly any student wishing to receive their degree online should do their homework before choosing a school. Each student needs to check out the available programs and participating schools to be sure that the school they choose is accredited. Another item to be sure to check is their placement percentage after degrees are earned and they should also be able to give you the median salary of their graduates. Online degrees are becoming more and more feasible everyday for those students willing to take the time to do their research first. Degrees in many fields can be earned in the comfort of the student’s home and usually work can be done at the student’s convenience in a timely manner. The Internet offers many venues and much information that can be used to choose a school that is right for you.

How to Find the Best Interior Design School

With over a hundred, or even thousands, of interior design schools all over United States and Canada, absolutely finding the best one would be like looking for that tiny needle in a haystack.

All these schools are located in different locations geographically, and there will definitely be differences in the feel, aesthetics and atmospheres of each school. An art industrial design school in Los Angeles will differ greatly from an interior design school in San Diego, California. These schools will differ in the manner of course loads, students enrolled in the institutions and will also offer different degrees of education in their interior design programs.

So with every other design school, different institutions have different campus sizes, varying numbers of registered students, assorted methods of housing and will require a varied amount of money for cost of education. A hair design school located in Brattleboro, Vermont will differ greatly from a hair design school established in Louisiana. The education offered in one institution is not the same as that in another establishment. The basics on the program majors may be the same but the manner of teaching and the specifics are sure to change greatly from one school to another.

Programs that are offered in floral design schools in Kansas will vary from those offered in other floral design schools located elsewhere. This is also true for set and fashion design schools. A set design school in Seattle or a fashion design school in New York will have an immense difference in size, atmosphere, financial costs and in other aspects when compared to a school in other locations in the country. The hours that students need to log might also show some differences in diverse places.

Variations in these aspects will factor into any prospective student's decision when it comes to choosing design schools. Any student has different requirements and criteria when it comes to picking the school that best fits him and his financial situation.

A student will choose a school depending on the location, depending on whether his choice leans toward a school near his home or far from his present location, the student might choose a school that is only a short commute from his home or a school that would require him to relocate and perhaps live in an on campus apartment.

Another factor in choosing a design school is the level of degree offered. Depending on whether the student wants to study in a program for a certificate, a diploma, an associate's degree or a bachelor's degree in design, the student will pick a school that offers this specific degree.

Another factor is the cost of the education, whether it is affordable or expensive. A student would normally have to choose between private institutions and public schools. A private institution is generally more expensive when compared to a public school.

The size of the school is also a consideration. A prospective student will choose a school depending on whether the student will favor a school that represents a close knit community and cater to only a limited number of students or whether the student prefers to remain as an anonymous member of the population in a large university.

The feel and the atmosphere of an institution are also other criterion that needs to be thought of. A student may want to be enrolled in a school with a very relaxed atmosphere or he might go for the other end of the spectrum and enroll in a school with a rigid academic schedule. It all depends on the student's preferences.

The only thing that all these design schools have in common might be their offerings of basic knowledge and fundamental skills in interior design and other specific disciplines. A student may opt to register in any one of the hundred or so design institutions depending on the different merits of these establishments.
